My collague, who sees my suffering through the application marathon every day, said that she once heard or read that everyone in academia should aim at one hundred rejections. I am such a fan of this!
It makes the whole miserable “Will they accept my paper?” into something that only knows winners and, as a side effect, makes for a nice milestone. If I ever reach the 100 rejections benchmark, and if at that point there is no tenure in sight, why not give up? 100 rejections means having really tried.
